Our team’s defender, Erik Kusnyir, suffered a serious injury on the match against Újpest. Erik, who has recently celebrated his 24th birthday, had to be substituted in the 18th minute after a bad move and the examinations revealed a serious issue.
Our defender tore his anterior cruciate ligament, which means that he has to undergo surgery and the team cannot count on him for a long period of time.
We wish our player a speedy and full recovery, and a quick return to the pitch!
After last Saturday’s game against Diósgyőr (2-2) and before this Saturday’s home match against Ferencváros, Loki played in Újpest on Tuesday. The line-up changed according to our expectations (as our team has 3 matches in 1 week), so among the starting eleven were Hamzat Ojediran, Stefan Loncar, Botond Vajda and Thor Úlfarsson, the Icelandic striker who arrived at Loki during the winter. On the day of the match, there was a change of ownership at the home club, so the effect of this fact on the performance of Újpest was unknown.
In the 1st minute of the game, Újpest already appeared in a scoring position but Balázs Megyeri made a brilliant save to deny the 11-meter shot of Kevin Csoboth. The attacks of Újpest lasted for only a few minutes, after which DVSC took control of the game at some parts and tried to maintain this control. Unfortunately, in the 18th minute, Erik Kusnyir got injured, he had to be substituted, so Nimród Baranyai came off the bench.
The first chance for Debrecen came in the 31st minute: Joao Oliveira almost took the ball in front of the goal but at the end, he did not shoot. Until the break, there were no dangerous situations in front of either of the goals, so the match was decided in the second half.
The second half was a bit more eventful. Christian Manrique and Brandon Domingues came off the bench, and Loki tried to maintain possession. However, after a counter-attack in the 48th minute, Tamás Kiss, the player of Újpest, made a shot but the ball didn’t end up in the net.
More than 30 minutes before the end, Jevtoski was sent off the pitch because of a serious fault against Ojediran (at first, the referee gave a yellow but after the VAR-check, he gave a red card). Thus, DVSC was in a numerical superiority from that point on. Due to the advantage, Loki had some chances and in the 69th minute, Balázs Dzsudzsák came on as a substitute.
In the 73rd minute, Banai saved the header of Dreskovic, after which Balázs Dzsudzsák shot wide off the goal. The highly anticipated Debrecen goal finally came in the 78th minute: after János Ferenczi’s great cross, Brandon Domingues headed the ball into the right side of the goal from 6 meters (0-1). During the endgame, Thor’s header was disallowed due to a prior fault and Megyeri made another great save. Moreover, our victory was secured with one more goal: in the 94th minute, Balázs Dzsudzsák made a nice cross and Brandon Domingues scored again (0-2). At the end of the extra time, Újpest was awarded a penalty, which Mörschel converted but it was only a consolation goal.
After 10 years, DVSC could win in Újpest. We will continue on Saturday against Ferencváros.
According to the coach
Nebojsa Vignjevic: The red card decided the match. We didn’t start badly, then the match became more balanced but the red card proved to be too much for us.
Srdjan Blagojevic: It was not the best performance of our team but I’m happy because of the success and the 3 points. The atmosphere at the stadium was really strange, maybe it also had an influence on the players. Erik Kusnyir has a sore knee, examinations are awaiting him.
The first league match of 2024 started in a real derby atmosphere and in decent weather conditions in spite of the fact that it was the beginning of February. Dominik Kocsis, who arrived on Thursday, was not in the squad yet as well as Brandon Domingues, who was out because of a smaller health issue. However, Jorgo Pellumbi and Soma Szuhodovszki, the new winter arrivals, were in the starting eleven.
At the beginning of the game, Loki appeared in a scoring position. In the 3rd minute, thanks to a brilliant pass from Soma Szuhodovszki Joao Oliveira had a chance to break towards the goal, but he shot wide from 8 meters. The will of Loki was predominant and in the 7th minute, the goalkeeper of Diósgyőr saved the header of Meldin Dreskovic. Our team was playing well; in the 16th minute, Donát Bárány headed the ball over the bar from close-range, after which a less eventful period followed. In the final minutes of the first half, in the 37th minute, the guest team also had a huge chance: Bényei headed over the goal from a few meters, then Balázs Megyeri made a brilliant save to deny Edomwonyi’s shot. Even though Loki was dominating, no goals were scored until the break.
The second half also started with the attacks of DVSC, however, it was Diósgyőr that took the lead. In the 51st minute, Ágoston Bényei unleashed a shot into the bottom right corner from 16 meters (0-1). Therefore, DVSC found themselves in a difficult situation, moreover, in the 58th minute, it became even harder as DVTK doubled their avantage: at the end of a quick counter-attack, Jurek headed the ball into the goal from close-range (0-2). From that point on, achieving points required a huge effort, so for this reason, Alexandros Kyziridis, Thor Úlfarsson and Stefan Loncar came on for the last 30 minutes.
Right before that, Loki pulled one back: in the 62nd minute, Balázs Dzsudzsák scored a beautiful free-kick goal from 24 meters into the top right corner (1-2). Thus, it looked like the endgame was going to be exciting and that’s how it was. Our team did everything for equalizing, in the 75th minute, Donát Bárány headed the ball over the bar, then in the 77th minute, Csaba Szatmári received his second yellow card, so he was sent off the pitch.
During the endgame, DVSC put a big pressure on the opponent (while Balázs Megyeri saved a one-on-one situation), and in the 85th minute, Thor Úlfarrson headed wide off the goal. The equalizer goal came in the 89th minute! János Ferenczi made a nice pass from the left, and Erik Kusnyir headed the ball with a beautiful movement into the top left corner (2-2). The game ended in a draw, so we will continue against Újpest on Tuesday.
According to the coach
Srdjan Blagojevic: From my point of view, it was a stressful game, we played well until we conceded the first goal. At the beginning, we were obviously better, we had our chances, but then the play became chaotic, which I don’t like. I have mixed feelings, I’m a little bit sad because we wanted to win. I would like to praise the players because they could make a comeback after 0-2.
Miklós Simon: I would like to praise my players, however, at the beginning we were too shy. Luckily, we became better organized and I’m proud of my players. We were able to score goals but we couldn’t finish the match.

This year, NB1.hu organized the Hungarian Golden Ball award ceremony. The editorial team invited Hungarian football-focused editorial offices and sports journalists to vote, and their votes determined the nominees. NB1.hu initiated a poll on January 13, asking the readers to choose the best individuals of Hungarian football in 2023. In each category, there were five names that received at least one vote from journalists, but readers also had the option to vote for others.
The closest competition was in the category of foreign coaches working in Hungarian football. Eventually, the Serbian coach of DVSC, Srdjan Blagojevic, was named the best (39%). He surpassed the current coach of Ferencváros, Dejan Stankovic (30%), and the former coach of FTC, Stanislav Cherchesov (20%).
“I would like to ask our supporters to come to the stadium in large numbers. I know our Ultras come to every game and we have very good supporters, but I want them to fill the stadium. We need the 12th player and that is you! The city of Debrecen, our partners and myself are constantly investing in this club. That is why I would like to see the people of Debrecen at our games. We need you. It’s not about money, it’s about the fact that the players need your support. We have a beautiful stadium that everybody should be proud of. We also have to be proud of our club as it is part of our identity and legacy. There is no future without our supporters!”
DVSC held a season-opening press conference at Nagyerdei Stadium. Among the participants were the president Ike Thierry Zaengel, managing director Balázs Makray, head coach Srdjan Blagojevic and the four new players of DVSC, namely Soma Szuhodovszi, Jorgo Pellumbi, Thor Úlfarsson and Dominik Kocsis.
Ike Thierry Zaengel, the president, reminded everyone that all changes happening in the life of the club were part of a 3-year process and the second year was going on. The goal of DVSC is to reach the international level. “Bringing a new coach was part of this development and that’s why we are signing new players”, said the president. He asked the fans to come to the stadium in large numbers as they were the 12th player, very much needed. Ike Thierry Zaengel made an important announcement: DVSC wants to build a Loki museum within the stadium, considering the legacy of the club.
The managing director Balázs Makray stated the actual motto of DVSC: “Constant development and positive attitude are the most important”. The work at the club is systematic and planned, while the new owner invests significant resources and energy into the team. Good relations with the supporters are equally important. Balázs Makray has also talked about the fact that the quality and age of the recently signed players show that the team of the future is being built, relying on the Academy in the first place. Increasing the number of viewers is quite relevant and for this reason, the first team has to perform well. The managing director also mentioned that the income from selling the player’s right of Péter Baráth was put to good use, considering the new winter arrivals.
According to Srdjan Blagojevic, the team did well during the pre-season and he was glad that the squad was strengthened. “A long and interesting half-season is in front of us, we need trust and patience”, said the head coach. He also mentioned that the players and the technical staff always wanted to stay the same and no matter of the circumstances, they stuck to this principle.
Soma Szuhodovszki talked about the long and tough preparation period but immediately added that he felt very good at Loki. He’s glad to be here and hopes that he made a good decision from the point of view of his career. He finds it quite relevant to prove himself in front of the fans.
Jorgo Pellumbi talked about the great impressions that he had, adding that he would like to be a helpful member of the team. Thor Úlfarsson also mentioned the friendly atmosphere and the right decision about signing for DVSC. Dominik Kocsis joined Loki on Wednesday. He said that he was very happy to be here and he would do his best for the success of the team.
DVSC signed the 21-year-old Dominik Kocsis. The 175 cm tall striker, who can be deployed on the wings and also as a centre-forward , is coming from Honvéd. Despite his young age, he is an experienced player. Earlier, he was a player of Diósgyőr and played in 40 NB I and 41 NB II matches, scoring 4 goals. Dominik Kocsis has made 12 appearances for the U21 national team, scoring 3 goals for the team.
Zsombor Bévárdi leaves DVSC. The 24-year-old player joined the club in 2019, and over the years, he played in 82 NB I and NB II league matches, scoring 6 goals in the colours of Loki.
We would like to thank Zsombor Bévárdi for everything he did for the club and wish him all the best in his future career!
On Thursday, DVSC played the last preparation match in the Turkish training camp before travelling back to Hungary on Friday. The opponent of Loki was Buducnost Podgorica, the leader of the table in the Montenegrin championship. Our starting eleven consisted of players who were not playing or didn’t play much against Novi Pazar on Wednesday.
At the beginning of the match, Loki was dominating and in the 4th minute, Stefan Loncar scored after a set piece but the referee flagged it for offside. However, in the 10th minute, our team scored a valid goal: after Balázs Dzsudzsák’s free-kick, János Ferenczi headed the ball into the goal from 10 meters (1-0).
Subsequently, Buducnost tried to create some chances but did not succeed much. In the 22nd minute, following a beautiful attack, Botond Vajda passed to Balázs Dzsudzsák, who unleashed a shot from 17 meters but the goalkeeper made a brilliant save. The Montenegrin team also had a clear-cut chance from the counterattack, but Balázs Megyeri deflected the ball. There were some other smaller chances (our goalkeeper made another great save) but the score stayed the same until the break.
In the second half, DVSC had more control of the match, our team led some great actions but there were some mistakes as well. In the 62nd minute, Donát Bárány curled the ball over the goal from close-range. However, in the 63rd minute, our homegrown striker did not miss the chance as he headed the ball into the goal from 8 meters after Balázs Dzsudzsák’s beautiful cross (2-0). In the 67th minute, Balázs Megyeri hit a powerful cross over the top, then Stefan Loncar scored again, but a preliminary push meant that his goal was disallowed as well as the one of Donát Bárány shortly afterwards.
In the endgame, there were some promising chances in front of both goals but no more goals were scored. On February 3, DVSC is going to play a league match against Diósgyőr, starting at 5.30 at Nagyerdei Stadium.
On Wednesday, DVSC played the fifth preparation match in the Turkish training camp. The opponent of Loki was Novi Pazar, a Serbian first division team. Among our starting eleven were the 18-year-old Benedek Erdélyi, the 17-year-old Csaba Hornyák, the 19-year-old Máté Tuboly as well as Tamás Batai, who celebrated his 19th birthday on Tuesday. Among the starting lineup of the opponent were the goalkeeper Filip Pojovic, who earlier played in Fehérvár, Felcsút and Újpest, and the striker Marko Scepovic, who was a player of Videoton.
The first bigger chance was created by Loki in the 11th minute, when Nimród Baranyai unleashed a shot from 8 meters but the Serbian goalkeeper saved it. After that, it was the fight that dominated and the play was mostly balanced. In the 37th minute, Soma Szuhodovszki made a left-sided cross and Meldin Dreskovic headed wide of the goal. Until the break, there were no promising chances in front of either goal.
Ádám Bódi and Alexandros Kyziridis came on for the second half, while Novi Pazar basically changed their lineup. Midfield play dominated, there were no dangerous situations on either side of the pitch. After a defensive mistake in the 62nd minute, Benedek Erdélyi deflected a clear-cut chance. Still, the match was not characterized by tough duels instead of big chances. In the 82nd minute, Máté Tuboly passed the ball to Ádám Bódi, who shot over the goal. A few minutes later, he shot again but the goalkeeper saved it, so no goals were scored.
We will continue on Thursday against the Montenegrin Buducnost Podgorica.
Peter Olawale and DVSC part ways. The 21-year-old Nigerian striker arrived in Debrecen in the summer of 2022. In 2023, he was on loan at the Armenian FC Noah and then at the Maltese Balzan FC. He played in 4 league matches and 1 cup game in the colours of Loki.
After the 1-0 victory against the Romanian Ploiesti, the 3-3 draw against the Polish Cracovia and the 3-2 win against the South African TS Galaxy, DVSC played the fourth preparation match in the Turkish training camp. On Monday, the opponent of Loki was the Slovenian Olimpija Ljubljana. As we have already announced, the technical staff divided the squad into two parts, so those players got an opportunity this time who were not playing or didn’t play much on Saturday.
At the beginning of the game, there were no dangerous situations, Loki had more possession of the ball and had the opportunity to practice pressing and building up the attacks. In the 15th minute, the Slovenian team hit the right post and in the 19th minute, they took the lead with a close-range shot (0-1). Our team tried to increase the pace until the break. In the 30th minute, Donát Bárány headed over the goal, and not long after, he made one more header but the goalkeeper of Olimpija saved it. In the 44th minute, their goalkeeper made a brilliant save to deny the attempt of Balázs Dzsudzsák. No more goals were scored until the break.
In the second half, DVSC took on an attacking approach. However, in the 51st minute, Ljubljana, who were playing fast and well, doubled their advantage (0-2) after a lost ball. Later on, our team had some smaller and bigger chances but in the 66th minute, the Slovenian team scored again after a beautiful individual action. Not long after, our opponent scored one more goal after our mistake (0-4). It was a useful match, from which our team can learn. The next match will be against the Serbian Novi Pazar on Wednesday.
