Painful defeat at home: DVSC-Mezőkövesd 0-1

DVSC started the final period of the championship against Mezőkövesd at Nagyerdei Stadium. Erik Kusnyir, Thor Úlfarsson and Jorgo Pellumbi were out of the squad due to injuries. Among the starting eleven were Botond Vajda, Soma Szuhodovszki, Hamzat Ojediran, Ádám Bódi as well as the 19-year-old Tamás Batai, who was in the starting line-up for the first time in NB I.

The kit manager of our team, Norbert Csarnai, has recently celebrated his 50th birthday. He has been serving DVSC for exactly 25 years, which means that he has literally spent half of his life at Loki. He was greeted by our team’s managing director Balázs Makray and also by Balázs Dzsudzsák on behalf of the team. On the occasion of this beautiful anniversary, Norbert Csarnai performed the kick-off before the game. Well done, Csari!

At the beginning of the match, midfield play dominated and the first bigger chance came in the 18th minute. After Soma Szuhodovszki’s cross, the goalkeeper of Mezőkövesd could clear only with difficulty. In the 27th minute, Botond Vajda made a dangerous shot and Loki tried to press their opponent at the end of the first half. However, no goals were scored until the halftime.

The second half was more eventful. In the 49th minute, Botond Vajda shot wide off the goal, then the goalkeeper of Mezőkövesd made a save to deny Stefan Loncar’s attempt. More than thirty minutes before the end, Brandon Domingues came off the bench, not long after which Balázs Dzsudzsák, Christian Manrique and Donát Bárány also came on. Prior to that, Mezőkövesd took the lead when Bőle shot the ball into the right corner of the goal from 16 meters (0-1).

In the 70th minute, Donát Bárány headed wide off the goal, our team tried to equalize. Mezőkövesd were pressed to their goal at times, with Soma Szuhodovszki narrowly missing the target from long range in the 77th minute. Brandon Domingues also had a chance but Loki could not equalize despite their striving, so the match ended with a painful defeat.

According to the coach

Srdjan Blagojevic: Congratulations to Mezőkövesd on the victory. On behalf of the coaching staff and the team, I would like to apologize to the fans, it was not a successful match. I am really disappointed. We had known it before that it was not going to be easy, but we expected a better game. We didn’t make good decisions on the last 20 meters and around the box, we missed the key passes and good shots, while making too many mistakes. The game became chaotic after the goal that we conceded, we were too nervous and could not find good solutions.

Milan Milanovic: Debrecen played well, they pressed us, so we could create chances only in the second half. I admit that we parked the bus in front of the goal but it was needed for the victory. This success can give a boost to the team.

Heroic farewell to the Hungarian Cup: DVSC-Ferencváros 1-1, with penalties: 3-5

On Wednesday evening, DVSC clashed with the title defender Ferencváros for a spot among the top 8 teams in the MOL Hungarian Cup. The eight-finals started in a frenetic atmosphere, worthy of its ranking. Loki could not count on the injured Erik Kusnyir and Thor Úlfarsson this time. However, Ádám Bódi and Jorgo Pellumbi were back on track, with the latest among the starting eleven.

At the beginning of the match, in the 4th minute, the goalkeeper of FTC saved Donát Bárány’s shot. Loki was prepared and entered the game well. In the 7th minute, János Ferenczi had a dangerous shot from 19 meters but it went wide off the goal. DVSC were forced to make a substitution already in the 10th minute: Jorgo Pellumbi felt some pain in his legs, so Oleksandr Romanchuk came off the bench. Our team looked quite concentrated and well-organized, having a clear advantage in some spaces.

In the 22nd minute, Loncar from Ferencváros shot over the goal. Ten minutes later, Balázs Dzsudzsák curled the ball over the goal from a 24-meter free-kick. In the 40th minute, our captain unleashed another shot but Varga made a brilliant save to deny it. Right before the break, VAR detected a penalty for FTC due to a handball, which was converted by Pesic (0-1).

Dominik Kocsis came on for the second half. Brandon Domingues jumped out of the defenders but Abena fouled him, for which he received a red card. Thus, Loki continued the match in a numerical superiority. Donát Bárány almost equalized but the ball went over the goal after his header. In the 55th minute, Varga saved János Ferenczi’s shot, then Soma Szuhodovszki and Stefan Loncar came on as substitutes (later Ádám Bódi and during the extra time, Tamás Batai also came on). DVSC switched to an even more attacking approach.

In the 75th minute, another shot from János Ferenczi went over the goal, then came the endgame. In the 78th minute, after Domingues’ shot, the ball bounced on Cisse’s hand within the box and referee awarded a penalty this time as well. At first, Donát Bárány shot the ball into the hands of the goalkeeper but he converted the rebound (1-1). After that, FTC’s coach, Stankovic was complaining, for which he received a red card from the referee Kararó. Excitement grew and DVSC created some chances. The question of qualification was not decided within the regular time of play.

At the very beginning of the extra time, Donát Bárány headed wide off the goal, and DVSC had more possession. The goalkeeper of FTC made a brilliant save to deny Dominik Kocsis’ curl, so the team started the final stage of the game with a score of 1-1. There were a lot of duels during the second part of the extra time, but no winners, so it was time for the penalties.

Kodro didn’t miss, Ádám Bódi converted, Abu Fani also but Dominik Kocsis missed it. Then came Ramirez, whose shot was accurate and that was true for Soma Szuhodovszki’s too. Marquinhos converted, János Ferenczi too. In the last round, Zachariassen didn’t make a mistake, so FTC qualified to the next round.

We will continue on Saturday against Mezőkövesd, starting at 12:30 at Nagyerdei Stadium.

According to the coach

Srdjan Blagojevic: Congratulations to Ferencváros for qualifying. I’m proud of my team because recently, we have played 4-5 tight games against Ferencváros, a team that was successful on the international stage too. It means that we also have quality. We played well already in the first half, we had a lot of chances, but in order to win, we need to use our chances. Perhaps, we should have been more patient during the extra time. I’m sorry because of this game. I would like to say thanks to the fans for their support and I would like to have this kind of atmosphere at all our matches. I would like ask everybody to come to the stadium on Saturday as well. One more comment for the people, who make the schedule of the matches: it’s 10 pm., we played 120 minutes and we will play at noon on Saturday… But my message is that we will survive!

On behalf of FTC, Leandro was present on the press conference: We played a very exciting match, our players proved that if sliding and crawling are necessary, they are capable of that too. Everybody fought for one another.

An important and valuable victory: DVSC-Puskás Akadémia 1-0

Loki couldn’t count on four players on Saturday’s game against Puskás Akadémia: Erik Kusnyir had a surgery, Thor Úlfarsson was out for several weeks, while Ádám Bódi and Jorgo Pellumbi were missing due to minor injuries. Before the match, the president Ike Thierry Zaengel and the managing director Balázs Makray thanked József Varga, one of the legendary players of Loki, for everything he did for the club, and they also greeted Soma Szuhodovszki on the occasion of his 50th appearance in the first division.

Among the starting eleven were Soma Szuhodovszki and Hamzat Ojediran, as well as János Ferenczi, who was playing with one line higher than his usual position.

At the very beginning of the match, Bárány Donát appeared in a scoring position after Balázs Dzsudzsák’s pass in the first minute, but the goalkeeper could save his close-range shot. After that, DVSC was dominating, however, Balázs Megyeri had to be cautious after a corner in the 10th minute. In response to that, Pécsi also had to move when Brandon Domingues shot from the back, but after that there were no dangerous situations in front of the goals. In the 35th minute, Nimród Baranyai broke into the box, he clashed with one player but the referee awarded only a corner and a yellow card because of the player talking back. In the 43rd minute, Batik hit the bar from 17 meters, but no goals were scored until the break.

The second half began with the same line-up, and for some time, midfield play and a tactical game dominated. Thirty minutes before the end, Stefan Loncar came off the bench (not long after, Oleksandr Romanchuk, Márk Szécsi, Dominik Kocsis and for the end, Máté Tuboly also came on). At that time, our opponent had more possession and in the 62nd minute, Balázs Megyeri saved Favorov’s shot. In the 65th minute, Donát Bárány headed wide off the goal, then came the endgame.

The endgame started with a Loki goal! In the 75th minute, after some turmoil following a corner, Márk Szécsi headed the ball into the goal from 12 meters (1-0). The tough battle continued on the pitch, a lot of duels took place. Our team fought until the end, and earned an important and valuable victory due to their hard work.

We will continue against Ferencváros in the Hungarian Cup on Wednesday, starting from 9 pm.

According to the coach

Srdjan Blagojevic: I am really happy because we won against a good team. Since I am the coach of Debrecen, this is our first victory against Puskás. It was a tough match. Puskás is doing a good job in Felcsút. We had some matches when we were able to create a lot of chances, but could not win; we had less chances this time, but we won, so that’s football. Today’s success will give us self-confidence for the next games.

Zsolt Hornyák: I expected a tough match and it was like that. Congratulations to Debrecen. Several players were missing and it caused a problem for us. We conceded an easy goal, we were not fresh enough, so it was a one-goal game.

We would have deserved more: Fehérvár-DVSC 1-0

On Sunday, DVSC played an important away game against Fehérvár FC. Erik Kusnyir is out for a longer period of time, while Thor Úlfarsson was missing because of a minor injury. What concerns our starting eleven, there were no big surprises as Dusan Lagator was the centre-back, while Hamzat Ojediran and Stefan Loncar were playing as midfielders right in front of the defense.

The match started at an intensive pace, with both teams fully engaging in the battle. Our team was well-organized and had more possession in the first 15 minutes of the game. In the 16th minute, Dusan Lagator shot over the goal from 15 meters, then in the 24th minute, Nimród Baranyai clashed with Schön inside the box and Fehérvár was awarded a penalty. Stefanelli took on the penalty, Balázs Megyeri didn’t move, he punched the ball away. However, the referee Andó-Szabó, interestingly enough, ordered the penalty to be retaken due to some slight movements by the defenders (our head coach questioned this decision and received a yellow card). Christensen didn’t miss the chance in the 30th minute (1-0).

It was an unusual decision that had be to be accepted by the team. We managed it somehow as Balázs Dzsudzsák shot a dangerous free-kick after that, while Donát Bárány made a header but the goalkeeper saved it. The score stayed the same until the break.

At the very beginning of the 2nd half, Dusan Lagator headed wide off the goal. DVSC tried to equalize and dominated. In the 50th minute, the home goalkeeper saved János Ferenczi’s shot, not long after which Brandon Domingues was fouled 19 meters from the goal but no free-kick was awarded. Loki did everything and in the 58th minute, Dominik Kocsis made his debut as the new winter arrival. Thirty minutes before the end, Hamzat Ojediran shot wide off the goal at the end of a great free-kick combination. Our team played better than the opponent.

In the 63rd minute, Csongvai took on a free-kick but shot wide off the goal. Máté Tuboly and Christian Manrique came off the bench, then Soma Szuhodovszki and Ádám Bódi also came for the endgame. Our team tried to press the opponent. Even though Soma Szuhodovszki was close to scoring in the 85th minute, Loki could not equalize during the final minutes as Soma hit the post. We will continue with at home against Puskás Akadémia on Saturday.

According to the coach

Bartosz Grzelak: Debrecen was a great opponent with a great coach. Either team could have won. I’m proud that each player, who comes off the bench, understands our play. It is one of the greatest victories since I’m the coach of Videoton. We have to do our best.

Srdjan Blagojevic: Congratulations to Fehérvár on the victory. The match was full of emotions and it was decided by the penalty. Even though we had a lot of shots, we could not score. In the first half, we were not brave enough but after the break, we played better and exploited some spaces. In order to win, we have to score goals and find a solution for this problem. We were dominating; however, we were not able to score. For this reason, we need to reset things.

Alexandros Kyziridis continues on loan in Slovenia

Alexandros Kyziridis, our Greek player, continues his career on loan at the Slovenian NS Mura until the summer. During this season, the 23-year-old winger played in 9 matches in the ranks of Loki, scoring 2 goals. Mura is now at the 6th place in the Slovenian championship.

We wish him good luck!

Thank you Józsi! József Varga leaves DVSC

József Varga leaves DVSC by mutual agreement with the club. The 35-year-old homegrown player made his debut in the first team of DVSC in 2008. He won both the championship and the Hungarian Cup with Loki 3 times, and made 34 appearances for the Hungarian national team. As a player with an exemplary attitude and work ethic, he was a key player of DVSC in the Champions League, scoring important goals. He won the Zilahi award and became the favourite of the fans and an icon of our club.

József Varga played more than 200 games in the colours of Loki. He played an important role in the team’s immediate return to the first division after their relegation in 2020. Recently, he has been playing less and the club respected the player’s wish to continue his career. For this reason, parties agreed to terminate his contract. Indeed, Józsi has the opportunity to train with our second team as long as he doesn’t find a new team. On the basis of negotiations, we expect him to return to DVSC at the end of his playing career and we would like him to continue his professional career at our club.
We would like to thank József Vara for everything he did for our club. You will stay a member of the DVSC family forever!

It was a huge battle: DVSC-FTC 1-2

DVSC as last year’s bronze medallist hosted Ferencváros, the title defender, at Nagyerdei Stadium on Saturday in an unforgettable atmosphere and in front of a lot of fans. Unfortunately, Erik Kusnyir, who suffered a serious injury at Újpest, was out of the squad. In support of him, our team marched onto the pitch amidst the loud cheers of the fans wearing T-shirts with the slogan “We’re waiting for your return, Erik”. Among the starting eleven were Nimród Baranyai, Dusan Lagator and Brandon Domingues, who scored a brace in the previous round.

Loki took the lead in the 1st minute of the match! After Brandon Domingues’ and Donát Bárány’s action, Christian Manrique took the ball and shot from 16 meters, it bounced and found its way into the net (1-0). It was a great start, however, FTC equalized in the 10th minute: after a left-sided cross, Barnabás Varga headed the ball into the left corner from 9 meters (1-1).

Later on, there was a big fight on the pitch, the match was really exciting but there were some mistakes as well. Our team was really determined but tried to play in a disciplined way. In the 34th minute, Balázs Megyeri made a brilliant save to deny Varga’s one-on-one opportunity, then in the 37th minute, Dibusz saved Donát Bárány’s shot. The score stayed the same until the break.

At the beginning of the second half, Donát Bárány scored wide off the goal from 15 meters, then Balázs Megyeri made a huge save to deny Wingo’s shot. The match was still tense, with lots of duels but the play was balanced. In the 63rd minute, our goalkeeper saved Marquinhos’ curl, so obviously, Ferencváros made a lot of efforts in order to score. Thirty minutes before the end, Joao Oliveira came on as a substitute (Thor Úlfarsson, Tamás Batai and Soma Szuhodovszki also came on for the endgame). In the 70th minute, Christian Manrique had a chance but Dibusz saved his shot.

At the beginning of the final minutes, FTC gained an advantage. In the 74th minute, Zachariassen headed the ball into the right corner of the goal from close-range (1-2). Loki did everything to equalize but Dibusz saved János Ferenczi’s powerful shot in the 77th minute. DVSC led several attacks during the endgame (our team was close to scoring) but we could not equalize.

According to the coach

Srdjan Blagojevic: I’m proud and sad at the same time. I’m satisfied because of the way my team was fighting but we were not able to earn a point. We don’t have a lot of opportunities to play with teams that perform on the international stage as well but these kinds of games help us to improve. FTC also had to fight and we were close to score our second goal. It was a very good match.

Dejan Stankovic: Debrecen is a very good team, well organized and motivated. Both teams put a lot of energy into this game, it was an absolutely international-level match. It is an important success for us.
